    Relative pronouns

relative clause gives us information about things,peolpe, possessions, places and time using a relative pronoun.

Sometimes the relative clause is necessary to tell us which person / thing we are talking about (to define it) . It is a defining clause and in this case there are no commas:

                  ex: I met a woman who works for the UN organisations

Sometimes the relative clause is not necessary to define who/ what we are talking about.It gives extra information.In this case it a non-defining clause and there are commas before and ,if necessary, after the relative clause.

                   ex: Christmas,which is on a Thursday this year, is always a public holiday.

Relative pronouns: who - whom - whose - which - that - where - when .

1 - People

                      Who (subject)

                       A spectator is a person. A spectator watches a public event.

                  → A spectator  is a person who watches a public event.

                    Whom (direct / indirect object)

                        We met a woman yesterday.The woman is a famous writer.

                    → The woman whom we met yesterday is a famous writer.

                     Whose (possession)

                         A widow is a woman. the husband of this woman has died.

                     → A widow is a woman whose husband has died.

2 - Things

                      That / which

                           A watch is a thing. It tells you the time.

                      → A watch is a thing that / which tells you the time.

(Never use that in a non-defining clause )

3 - place

                   Where

                          A platform is a place . You wait for a train in this place.

                      →A platform is a place where you wait for a train.

4 - time

                 When

                      A public holiday is a day. All the shops and offices shut  down on that day.

                     →A public holiday is a day when all the shops and offices shut down.

NB : You can leave out the relative pronoun when it is an object

                              ex:  A hat is a thing that you wear on your head.
