Prepositions:

Prepositions tell us:

  1. Where things are: "the cat is Under the table"
  2. When things happen: "we start work at 8:15"
  3. How things are done: the cards were printed in gold"
  4. about directions and movements:"he is walking down the steet"

prepositions of place and movement:

A/ place:

  • at : he is at the door/ we live at number 12.
  • in : the students are in the classroom/he puts his hand in his Pocket.
  • on : the bag is on the desk/the books are on the shelf.
  • near : our school is near our house.
  • beside : he sits beside me.
  • over : the plane flies over the houses.
  • in front of : the car is in front of the house.
  • opposite : the shop is opposite the station.
  • Under : the cat is under the table.
  • above : our office is above the hairdresser's.
  • below : the kitchen is below my bedroom.
  • among : he is among the players to play in the match.
  • Next to : my neighbour is the person who lives next to my house.
  • between : the chemist shop is between the post office and the greengrocer's.
  • behind : the garden is behind the house.

B/ movement:

  • towards /to : we drove to Marrakesh / he ran towards the door.
  • into : she jumped into the pool.
  • out of : she climbed out of the pool.
  • onto : the glass fell onto the floor.
  • off : I took the photo off the wall.
  • across : we walked across the field to the river.
  • through : he walked out through the door/ i see through the window.
  • along : they planted trees along the street.
  • up / down : he walks up and down the street.
  • around : we planted flowers around the tree.
  • from : they are from France.

Time prepositions:

in on                   at                    
year (in 1998..) on day/ date (on monday/on15 April/on that day) at+ clock time (at 3 o'clock/at lunch/ at the moment/ at that time...)
month (in October...) on + a single day (on Easter day: on Christmas day..) at+ two/three days(at the week-end/at Christmas/Easter) (U.S.on the week-end)
season ( in winter...) on+day+part of day(on Friday morning/on Tuesday afternoon..) at+ night (when it is night): I can't sleep at night.

part of day (in the morning...)
NB:in the night(in the middle of the night  ex:I woke up in the night...

In time: early enough/before time

( ex: we got to the airport in time to have a coffee before checking in)

 

On time: at the right/exact time"on Schedule".

(ex: The plane took off on time. / I hope the meeting starts on time.)

NB:   1/we can use in for the time it takes to complete something:

ex: I did the crossword in five minutes.

         2/we can use in for a future time measured from the present.

ex: the photo will be ready in 10 minutes.(10 minutes from now).

      The shop will open in six weeks.
