Men were looking for dogs to take to Alaska where gold had been discovered. These men wanted big, strong dogs to pull sleds. Buck was a big dog and he lived in the warm Santa Clara Valley in California with Judge Miller and his family. Judge Miller was a rich man and had a big house with servants. Around the house there were fields and woods. All the other dogs respected Buck, and Judge Miller and his family treated him like a king. Some dogs lived outside and some little noisy dogs lived in the house, but Buck went wherever he wanted to go. He hunted with the Judge’s boys and he slept by the great fire in the Judge’s library. But , as we said, men were looking for dogs to work up in Alaska , and Buck was a big, strong dog. One of the Judge’s workers Manuel, needed money. Manuel wasted his money gambling and he had a big family ; he decided to kidnap Buck and sell him. Manuel called Buck and told him they were going for a walk. Buck was surprised when Manuel put a rope around his neck. Buck was not used to a rope. After all, Buck was a kind of a king at Judge Miller’s place. The call of the wild(4)
Life in the traces was difficult, but Buck grew wiser and stronger as each day passed. The lead dog named Spitz did not like Buck and was afraid that Buck would become the leader. Spitz tried to start a fight with Buck each day, but Buck avoided the fight because he was not ready. Buck had become cunning and patient like a wild beast. When Spitz and he fought, Buck would be ready.
The other dogs in the team felt that the leadership of Spitz was being challenged, so they stopped respecting Spitz as they once had done. François and Perrault became angry because it was more and more difficult to control the dogs. Everyone knew that sooner or later Spitz and Buck would have to fight for the leadership of the dog team.
‘Spitz is one bad devil,’ said Perrault.’ Some day he’s going to kill Buck.’
‘That Buck is two devils,’ replied François. ‘Every time I watch Buck I am certain of that. Listen: some fine day Buck is going to get as mad as hell and he’s going to chew up that Spitz and spit him out onto the snow. Sure. I know.’
One night after supper, one of the dogs discovered a rabbit, but missed it. Soon the whole team of dogs was after the rabbit. Near the camp was the Northwest Police with fifty dogs, huskies all, who joined the chase. The rabbit ran down a frozen river. It ran lightly over the snow, while the dogs fell through the snow and needed great force to run.
The pack of dogs was led by Buck who now felt the great joy of running after a wild thing, the living meat, to kill with his own teeth and wash his muzzle to the eyes with warm blood.
Only Spitz left the pack and ran around a narrow bit of land to meet the rabbit and the dogs. Buck did not know this, and when he went around that narrow bit of land he saw the rabbit and some other animal jump in front of the rabbit. It was Spitz. The rabbit could not turn, and as the white teeth of Spitz broke its back, the rabbit screamed as loudly as a man. At this sound, the sound of Life meeting Death, the dogs raised a hell’s chorus of delight.
Buck did not cry out. He ran at Spitz, and the two dogs rolled over and over in the snow. In a flash Buck knew it –the time had come. It was to the death. Around Buck and Spitz was a circle of dogs, waiting for the kill
Buck attacked again and again, but each time he met the sharp fangs of Spitz. Buck was furious; Spitz was calm and calculating. Buck began to tire, and Spitz just waited to go for the kill. Buck, however, had imagination-he pretended to attack Spitz shoulder, but he drove down and bit his leg. Spitz now stood on just three legs. Buck attacked again and again and the fight was over; the pack of dogs closed in on Spitz. Buck stood and looked on; he was the successful champion, the dominant primordial beast who made his kill and found it good.

The call of the wild(3)
The law of club and fang Buck’s first day in Alaska was like a nightmare. Buck had been taken from the heart of civilization and thrown into a wild and primordial place. Buck had many things to learn if he was going to survive. Fortunately, Buck learnt the first lesson by watching. Buck had never seen how dogs fight as they fought here. Here they fought like wolves, and the loser was killed.
One of Buck’s travel companions, Curly, approached a husky dog in a friendly way. The husky, with no warning, jumped at Curly and ripped her face from eye to jaw. Then the husky moved back and attacked again. This was the way wolves fought: they attacked and then retreated. In addition, whenever there was a fight, all the other dogs circled the two combatants. Whichever dog lost the fight was then ripped to pieces by the other dogs. This was the way Curly was killed. Before Buck recovered from the shock of the fight, he received another shock. François attached Buck and the other dogs to a sled as if they were horses. Then the dogs had to pull the sled! Buck’s dignity was hurt, but he was too wise to rebel. Buck did his best and learnt the life in the traces. If he made a mistake François hit him with the whip, or one of the more experienced dogs gave him a sharp bite. Buck was an excellent student. He learned to stop at ‘ho’ and to go ‘mush’. ‘those are very good dogs’, François told Perrault, ‘and that Buck he pulls like hell. I taught him to do everything with no problem’. So, for day after day, for days unending, Buck worked in the traces. The work was difficult, and Buck was always hungry. On Judge Miller’s place Buck ate only the best food, here Buck had to eat everything he was given in an instant, or the other dogs would steal his food. Buck learned to defend his portion of food, but he was still hungry. One day Buck saw another dog steal some bacon. The next day Buck did the same thing. François and Perrault looked for the thief, but they never found him. This first theft showed that Buck was fit to survive in the hostile Northland. It showed that Buck change and adapt. It also showed that Buck’s moral nature was disappearing. In the warm Southland, under the law of love and fellowship, it was good to respect private property and personal feelings; but in the Northland, under the law of club and fang, anybody who respected love and fellowship was a fool. The call of the wild (2) At a place known as college park Manuel met a man. Manuel received some money. ‘Why didn’t you put this dog in a crate?’ said the man angrily. ‘Just pull the rope and he won’t give you any trouble,’ replied Manuel and the other man seemed satisfied. Buck growled at the stranger, but the man pulled the rope so hard that Buck choked and fainted. Then Buck was placed in a crate and taken by train north. Buck travelled for two days without water. He became very thirsty and very angry. Buck wanted revenge! After two days of travelling Buck was carried off the train by four men. A stout man in a red sweater had bought him. When Buck saw him he threw himself against the bars of the crate. Buck had become a wild beast. ‘You are not going to let him out now,’ said one of the four men. ' yes I am,’ said the man in the red sweater He had a club in one hand and a hatchet in the other. He began to open the cage with the hatchet, and Buck attacked each time the man hit the crate. Finally, Buck was free. Buck attacked the man, but he was stopped by a terrible shock that knocked him to the ground. Buck attacked again and again received the same painful shock.
Buck had discovered something he would never forget: a man with a club must be respected. When Buck was defeated, the man in the red sweater came up to Buck and patted him on the head. ‘Well, Buck my boy,’ said the man in the red sweater with a friendly voice, ’You have learned your lesson. But if you try to attack me again, I will beat you until you’re dead.’ Then the man gave Buck some food and water. Buck was then sold to two French- Canadians, Perrault and François. These two men carried mail for the Canadian government. They took Buck and other dogs up to southern Alaska in a boat
One morning, during the trip, they brought the dogs up onto the deck. At the first step on the cold surface Buck felt something cold and soft in his feet. He jumped with surprise. This strange substance was white and some of it was falling from the sky. Buck smelled it and then licked it with his tongue. He was very confused. Everybody laughed at him, and Buck felt ashamed.
